Interior / Attached ADU Size Limits

Detached ADU Size Limits

  • On lots with at least 87,120 sq ft of buildable area, a detached ADU is capped at the lesser of 30% of the principal dwelling’s area (excluding garage, attic, and cellar) or 1,000 sq ft; on lots with at least 34,000 sq ft of buildable area, it is the lesser of 20% of that area or 800 sq ft.

What can you build in Connecticut?

  • Connecticut Public Act 21-29 (now CGS § 8-2o) established statewide ADU rules.

  • 54 municipalities did not opt out and are subject to the state's default ADU standards. Local bylaws in these towns must allow at least the minimums required by state law.
